Common questions

Is it really free? What is the catch?

There is no catch and no paid tier. Every font, colour, pattern and sticker is included. We are not able to sell subscriptions, so instead of a paywall we simply do not have one.

Where are my notes stored?

On your phone, in the app's own private storage. They are never uploaded. See the privacy policy.

How do I move my notes to a new phone?

  1. On the old phone, open Settings → Backup & Restore and choose Export.
  2. Save the file somewhere you can reach it again, and copy it to the new phone.
  3. Install Lila on the new phone, open Settings → Backup & Restore and choose Restore.

Restoring replaces the notes currently in the app. Lila makes an automatic backup first, but do the export before you factory-reset or hand away the old phone. Because nothing is stored on our side, we cannot recover notes for you.

I deleted a note by accident

Open Trash. Anything deleted in the last 30 days is there, and tapping it offers Restore. After 30 days it is removed permanently and cannot be recovered.

I forgot my passcode

On the lock screen, after five incorrect attempts, your recovery question appears. Answer it to get back in.

We cannot reset it for you, because we do not have your notes or your passcode. Nobody at our end can see or unlock them.

Does the passcode encrypt my notes?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. The passcode stops someone picking up your phone and reading your diary. It is not full-disk encryption, and someone with your unlocked phone and a computer could reach the underlying file.

Can I use Lila without an internet connection?

Yes, always. Lila makes no network requests at all. Airplane mode changes nothing.

Why is there no widget?

Home-screen widgets need native Android code that the app is not currently built with. It is the feature most likely to change that, and it is on the list.

Will you add cloud sync?

No. "Nothing leaves your phone" is the point of the app, not a limitation we are working around. Backup files are how you move between devices.

Reporting a bug

Email barichati0696@gmail.com. It helps a lot if you include:

Please do not send us the contents of your notes. We do not need them and we would rather not have them.

Requesting a feature

Genuinely welcome. The one thing we push back on is anything that would need an account or a server, because that breaks the promise the whole app is built on.
